The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) has just brought in a fresh system that lets players dictate to their bank that their cards are blocked from gambling sites – and it is already up and running.

Quite simply, the way to use it if you cannot help yourself from placing a bet online is to call your bank and get the card blocked. No more midnight gambling sprees or betting on an impulse when you are feeling sad. This “Common Commitment of Care for Problem Gambling” project can get the support of the top three most influential banks in Ireland – AIB, Bank of Ireland and PTSB, which have all signed up.

That is not all. These incidents do not simply stop with the banks just going on with their day after blocking your cards. They are also raising their efforts by offering staff training and customer support programs for people suffering from gambling addictions. It is like having a safety net that actually works.

More than 200 industry stakeholders, who have recently called on GRAI to tackle gambling harm in a direct manner, are supporting this card-blocking initiative to the extent of considering it a very strong first step to the kind of change that really matters.
